Pulling Out My "Sweet Tooth" (Whole30 Part I)

Okay, so this will be kinda weird but I've been blogging for the past month but not posting anything.  It's been about this "diet" Seth and I have been on.  I honestly don't know why I didn't post as we went along...but I'm guessing it's because then I would have been held accountable by all you readers.  HA!  So now that I'm pretty much on my last day, I'll start posting the updates.  So if you care to read on, here you go...

I'm really not one who typically has a New Year's Resolution.  So I wouldn't call this month long diet that Seth and I decided to do a New Year's Resolution.  We decided to do it in October but knew it wouldn't be possible to start it in November or December because of the holidays.

So here we are on the third day.  I'm typing this blog entry to keep my mind off of food.  I think about food A LOT.  My way of life revolves around food.  Lucky for me, I'm active and currently nursing all my calories out.  But recently my cravings have been off the charts and I just want to eat junk.  The doctor said it was probably from being tired (because I especially want to eat a lot at night).  Seth blames me for his bad eating habits as well.  As soon as I eat a meal I want dessert.  No matter how big that meal was I've got room for something sweet!

The diet is called the Whole 30.  I found out from a good friend of mine who highly recommended it.  It's something you do for 30 days (hence the name).  It is meant to change some of your eating habits and thinking about food and reset your system.  Without going into too much detail (you can Google it if you really want to know), the premise is that we eat meat, fruit and vegetables. The big kicker is no sugar of any kind.  Natural occurring sugar (like in fruit) is the only thing we can have.  There are also some limitations on certain oils and additives.  No grains of any kind or beans.

It has been a little bit of a struggle to figure out what we can eat.  I have always been a label reader but I have to scrutinize every ingredient for this and I'm just amazed.  There is sugar in so many things.  I bought some almond butter because I thought it would be okay but it has cane sugar added.  We also got some nuts that have some sort of oil in them.  So basically we need to eat "raw" everything.  Meals are not really too hard for us because we have typically eaten a lot of meat and vegetable meals.  We are also allowed to have potatoes.  I will be eating a lot of sweet potatoes because they are my favorite.

Our grocery budget will most likely take a hit this month, but we won't be eating out due to limited options, so that will be some money saved.  I'm also anticipating more trips to the grocery store to buy fresh produce.

A few days in and I'm doing just okay.  I've been warned I might get grouchy the first week.  I'm definitely craving stuff and just feel like I'm not full no matter how much I eat/snack.  I'm not limiting my calories at all...just making healthier choices when I do snack.  My body wants bad carbs! Oh, what I wouldn't do for some Cinnamon Chex right now...

I'm off to drink some water and eat some grapefruit.
